Benefits to brushing and flossing
Throughout the day plaque builds up on our teeth. It’s necessary to remove this plaque to keep the teeth and gum tissues healthy. Plaque left on the teeth can create acids that erode the teeth and cause decay. Plaque also finds a way in between the teeth which not only can cause decay where our brush doesn’t reach, but also irritates the gum tissues causing them to bleed and become inflamed. Flossing will help disturb that bacteria and keep teeth and gums happy and healthy.
Brushing Techniques and Tips
- Brush at least twice daily
- Brushing first thing in the morning (after breakfast) gives you a fresh start for your teeth and breath. Brushing is recommended before bed after any food or drink other than water.
- Use a soft bristled brush and fluoridated toothpaste.
- Brush for 2 minutes covering all surfaces of the teeth.
- Brush at a 45 degree angle towards the gum tissues in a small circular motion.
- Never “scrub” the teeth, as over time this can lead to recession.
- Electric toothbrushes are a wonderful choice for effective brushing.
Flossing techniques and tips
- Use about 18” of dental floss, wrapping between middle fingers and leaving about 2” in between. Scrap the sides of the teeth up and down in a gentle motion moving from one side of the tooth to the other. As you move from tooth to tooth, wind the “used” floss and let out the new from one finger to the other.
- Flossers are wonderful tools for ease of use or those with dexterity issues.
